Subject: solicitor general: insurance for ofws, ok as voluntary, not mandatory
hi all.
during the bicam session, we gathered that the proposal for mandatory insurance went back as early as 2002. in 2004, the recruiters requested the poea governing board through the poea administrator to issue a resolution to effect mandatory insurance coverage for the ofws. poea said they cannot do it. to reaffirm its position, poea sought the legal opinion of the office of the solicitor general.
in May 2004, the Office of the Solicitor General said that the proposal for compulsory insurance for OFWs need not be mandatory and may be done only on voluntary basis. It went on to say that a careful study of the proposal would show that it may not exactly be advantageous to the OFWs.

SEPTEMBER EVENTS PART 3
BIRTHDAY CELEBRATION
On Sept. 25, Vangie Novio celebrated her birthday (the first ever) which was held at Sinoni Restaurants Limited (Chinese Cuisine) at Zeto Court Abuja. Although it is stated there that it is Chinese! the ever Pinoy taste buds longed for Pinoy dish in which the ever delightful 'Pinoy Chef' Ana Dador obliged with Kare-kare con bagoong.
It was a night to remember. And why not? Since it was a semi-formal affair, anyone can just 'see' how 'formal' our young pinoys can get!
Caught on camera by our now known photographers, Erwin and Benjie, these pictures will be a nice token of that wondrous evening, even of that last Pinoy gathering with the beloved Msgr. Renzo. (He has now gone to Spain). The Philippine Consul-General Alex V. Lamadrid also graced the occasion.

The celebration was somehow extended - the actual birthday - Sept. 26. It was raining. But this was the night the company Dantata & Sawoe held its Team Building Party. Cultural dancers and live band were invited. It was an event which will definitely be etched in the celebrants memory - the Managing Director, Mr. Udo Heidschuster, after his boost- up speech ended up with greetings to Vangie Novio
and asked the band to sing Happy Birthday!
